Imagine you woke up this morning, got in your car, drove to the airport, parked, took a shuttle to the terminal, checked in at the counter, got a boarding pass, checked your luggage, went through security, got to the gate, boarded a plane, flew for a couple of hours and landed. Upon landing, the pilot’s voice booms over the speakers and says, “welcome to Philadelphia!”
You turn to the person sitting next to you and say, “but, I didn’t want to go to Philadelphia.”
He asks, “where did you want to go?”
You think for a moment and say, “I don’t know.”
My questions to you go something like this: why did you get in your car, drive to the airport, park, take a shuttle to the terminal, check in at the counter, get a boarding pass, check your luggage, go through security, go to the gate and board a plane?
The strange thing is this is how most people in our society go through their lives…and don’t realize what a negative impact it has on their entire lives!
They do things because they are “supposed to” or they think they “should,” yet they never really stop to think WHY they are doing what they are doing or where it is they are even trying to go.
They are just “going through the motions” (someone else’s motions).
Not to confuse a very simple concept, but what if you knew you wanted to go to Seattle? It is completely the opposite direction of Philadelphia, right? Yet, what would you have done to get there? You would have woken up this morning, got in your car, driven to the airport, parked, took a shuttle to the terminal, checked in at the counter, gotten a boarding pass, checked your luggage, went through security, got to the gate, boarded a plane, flew for a couple of hours and landed.
The lesson here is this: If you choose to do things in your life without thinking about WHERE you are actually trying to go and WHY are you doing what you are doing to get there, you can be deceiving yourself into thinking you are on the right course when, in reality, you are so far off course that you are heading in the opposite direction.
Knowing the WHERE is so much more important than knowing the HOW! Get clarity on the WHERE, take ACTION, and the HOW will appear.
